Quilting Fabric: 5 Essential Tips for a Seamless Experience

This versatile cotton fabric offers a world of possibilities, from dresses and skirts to button-down shirts and, of course, quilts. It's also an excellent choice for bags and home décor accents when paired with interfacing.

  1. Pre-wash Your Fabric: Ensure a Smooth Finish Before sewing, pre-washing your quilting cotton is crucial. This step removes the sizing from the fabric, reducing shrinkage and preventing colour bleeding (when colours run together).

  2. Press with Care: Achieve Precision and Perfection Ironing is essential for achieving perfect points and matching corners, especially when working on a quilt. Even if you're not creating a quilt, proper pressing will smooth the fabric and result in a more polished final product.

  3. Adjust the Tension: Maintain an Even Stitch If the fabric is gathering, puckering, or appears tight and uneven during sewing, the tension is too tight and should be loosened (by lowering the numbers on the sewing machine tension dial). Conversely, if there are loops on the back of the fabric or the thread shows on the bottom, the tension is too loose and should be tightened (by increasing the numbers on the tension dial).

  4. Trim as You Go: Ensure Accuracy and Precision Trimming each piece of fabric once sewn makes the project easier, as the fabric can warp and distort as it's handled, potentially leading to inaccuracies. When quilting, try trimming each piece to size before matching them up.

  5. Utilize a 1/4" Seam: Achieve Perfect Quilt Blocks Matching up quilt blocks requires an accurate or scant 1/4" seam. Use a special sewing foot or the markings on the needle plate to ensure your project is a success.

Designed by Patty Reed for Fabric Traditions, this cotton print fabric is perfect for quilting, apparel, and home décor accents. The colour palette includes teal, olive, brown, tan, and red.

For care, machine wash the fabric in cold water and tumble dry on low heat.

The fabric is 44" wide and sold by the yard. For example, an order of 1 yard (Qty=1) measures 44" x 36", while an order of 3 yards (Qty=3) is 44" x 108".
